An air compressor is an appliance, which converts gas or electrical power to kinetic energy by compressing or pressurizing air that is passed on bursts. There are plenty of procedures for air compression. The two major types are –
a. positive-displacement type, and
b. non-positive displacement type.
Positive-Displacement Type Air Compressor
It is a device works by pushing air into a container and the container’s volume is minimized for the effect of compression. Piston type air compressors make use this working principle by forcing air into a chamber with the help of some pistons. Rotary screw compressors use this compressing method by identical 2 helical screws. Vane compressors use a rotor for this purpose.
Non-Positive Displacement Type Air Compressor
Non-positive-displacement air compressors have centrifugal compressors. These use centrifugal force developed by a rotating impeller to speed up and then speed down trapped air that pressurizes it.
History of Air Compressor
In ancient days, blacksmiths used large bellows to strengthen their fire for powerful heat production. These ancient bellows were later enhanced as air compressors. In 1943, first air compressor was invented by engineers.
Types of Air Compressors
There are three different type of air compressors, which include
1. Centrifugal Air Compressors,
2. Rotary Screw Air Compressors, and
3. Reciprocating Air Compressors.
Centrifugal Air Compressors
A centrifugal air compressor transfers the energy by rotating impeller to air. This compressor generates high-pressure discharge with momentum generated by the revolving blade. This type spins at greater speeds rather than remaining compressor types. They develop steady flow, so these are developed for huge workloads.
Rotary Screw Air Compressor
This compressor has two rotors, which turn in tandem to create a mesh. Whenever the rotors rotate, gas gets pumped into the chamber and pressurized until it achieves the discharger port. One male rotor stimulates the female rotor when oil is introduced in the cylinder. The oil behaves as a lubricant seal, and coolant. The positive displacement compressor produced in non lubricated types too. These units utilize time gears to activate the rotors and organize operating temperature.
Reciprocating Air Compressors
These are positive type displacement compressors. Each compressor consist a piston and a cylinder. Whenever the piston makes a modification in volume by touching up and down, air is pressurized and transformed into energy. With the screw compressor, this may be non lubricated or oil-lubricated. Based on unit activity and size, by using air or water temperature of compressors is decreased to control the compressor and keep it at safe temperature.
Working of Air Compressor
Air compressors gather and accumulate air in a compressed tank, and by using valves and pistons to get the suitable pressure levels in an air storage tank, which is connected to the powering unit. There are some dissimilar types of piston compressors, which can produce uniform air pressure to the customer. Automotive compressors are also known as combustion engine compressors that utilize the piston up and down strokes to permit air in and compress the air in the compressor tank. Remaining piston compressors use a diaphragm called oil-free piston. These pistons draw air in, and compress it by not permitting air to release during the gathering period. These types are most common air compressors, which we are using today.
